Stepping into one of Leonard Ironside's greenhouses, you are immediately struck by the warm and humid atmosphere of plants growing in an active environment; rather like stepping into the Garden of Eden. The silence is only broken by the sound of bumble bees working to pollinate our tomatoes in the most natural way.
This environment allows the plant to produce huge photosynthetic leaves which supply water and nutrients to the fruits. When these green leaves have done their job and grow old they are removed and collected by a local farmer to be converted into compost.
Our tomatoes are harvested direct into the final market box each morning and, after our quality checks, they are ready for collection by our local customers. Many return our boxes to be reused. These local sales help us to reduce our carbon footprint and provide a source of fresh tomatoes daily.
Our high standards are compliant with the Assured Produce Standards which are independently audited on an annual basis by CMI. Our membership number is 6285.
Nothing goes to waste at Leonard Ironside's. Those tomatoes that don't meet our high standards are rejected and collected by our local farmer to be used to produce Kentish pork with a tomato flavour.
